The foundation’s first mandate is to address challenges with the Co-operative Legal Framework in African Countries. One of our first major projects is to develop a standard Draft Law that all Counties in Kenya can benchmark to as they pass their new Co-operatives’ laws. The Foundation went through a rigorous process of lobbying the Governors and County legislators to obtain their approval for the process. This project is in partnership with the Co-operative Alliance of Kenya, The Law Society of Kenya, USAID’s Financial Inclusion for Rural Micro-enterprises (FIRM) Project, The Council of Governors of Kenya, and Association of Professional Co-operators, among others.

The Co-operative Development Foundation of Africa is the grassroots foundation for Co-operatives in Africa with a Vision to be a net facilitator for the development of African Co-operatives. The foundation was founded in 2013 by the Hon. Joseph WN Nyagah (EGH), former M.P, Minister for Co-operative Development and Marketing, alongside other like-minded individuals: Prof. Margaret Kamar (EGH) former M.P, Minister for Higher Education, Science and Technology and James Nyoro, former Managing Director, Rockefeller Foundation Africa, all who have a passion for African Development issues and strongly believe in the Co-operative Business Model as a solution to Africa’s economic problems.
